This is a tricky question as all look & behave in different ways & personal preference plays a big part. Should I choose human hair, synthetic or woollen extensions? The dreads themselves can be made in synthetic or woollen materials & made as SE (single ended) or DE (double ended) dreadlocks depending on how much volume you are after. Depending on your wash routine braid ins can last 6-8 weeks before needing to be reinstalled & the set of dreadlocks you choose to purchase can be reinstalled over & over again making it quite cost effective with little to no damage to your hair.
